We envision a future where every business has one trusted global identity – the Legal Entity Identifier (LEI) – which is hardwired into all relationships and transactions.

As digital transformation fuels cooperation between businesses around the world, those that can use their LEI to establish legitimacy and, therefore, trust quickly can create unlimited growth opportunities. By easing international trade in this way, the LEI can also help to address a range of global challenges, including financial and corporate fraud, financial exclusion, friction in international capital flows, the burden of environmental compliance, money laundering, and the financing of terrorism.

In service of our vision, the Global Legal Entity Identifier Foundation (GLEIF) is on a mission to increase the value of the Global LEI System as a ‘public good’ by driving broader global LEI coverage across all regions, stimulating voluntary LEI usage as the basis of global cross-border trust, and advocating for the vLEI to become the prominent protocol for managing digitally verifiable organizational credentials globally.
