LEI Data LEI Mapping

Download GEM Entity ID-to-LEI Relationship Files

The Global Legal Entity Identifier Foundation (GLEIF) and Global Energy Monitor (GEM) introduced the first open-source relationship file that maps a Global Energy Monitor Entity ID (GEM Entity ID) assigned to an organization to its Legal Entity Identifier (LEI).

GEM is a non-profit organization that provides open-source, objective data on energy and heavy industry projects worldwide to support transparency and research related to energy and industrial infrastructure. At the core of GEM's ownership research is the Global Energy Ownership Tracker (GEOT), which provides a comprehensive, asset-level view of who ultimately owns and controls energy and heavy industry assets. The tracker publishes "ownership trees" spanning coal and gas plants, mines, pipelines, and heavy industry sectors, tracing connections from direct holders through intermediate entities to ultimate parent organizations, including corporations and governments. By mapping these complex corporate structures, GEM enables researchers and investors to connect physical assets with ownership and financial data.

The GEM Entity ID-to-LEI relationship file is based on a mapping process established by GEM and certified by GLEIF. GLEIF will publish the open-source relationship files monthly in CSV format, mapping both identifiers.

This certified mapping enables financial institutions, regulators, and central banks to link GEM's ownership data with global financial systems. By providing a standardized crosswalk between energy ownership and corporate identity, the GEM Entity ID-to-LEI mapping supports transparency in financial and ownership data, helping stakeholders analyse ownership relationships across energy assets while enabling informed capital allocation and risk assessment.

For further information on the GEM Entity ID-to-LEI relationship files, as well as the cooperation between GLEIF and GEM, please refer to the factsheet available for download at the bottom of this page.

The free-of-charge GLEIF Certification of LEI Mapping service ensures that organizations mapping the LEI to their identifiers use state-of-the-art methodologies and processes to do so accurately.
