The Legal Entity Identifier (LEI)

The birthplace of global organizational identity

The Legal Entity Identifier (LEI) is the starting point for achieving a globally connected network of verifiable, interoperable business identity and information. It is a unique 20-character alphanumeric code that enables anyone, anywhere in the world, to access clear, unique identification data about a legal entity.

GLEIF's Legal Entity Identifier (LEI): 506700GE1G29325QX363

Every LEI is unique and can represent only one entity.

Each entity’s LEI code connects to verified reference information from authoritative local sources, including the entity’s ownership structure, which is accessible in the Global LEI Index.

In this way, the LEI answers the questions of 'who is who’ and ‘who owns whom’.

The LEI adheres to four necessary principles of ISO 17442:

  1. A global standard
  2. A single unique identifier assigned to each legal entity
  3. Supported by high-quality data
  4. A public good, available free of charge to all users
Every LEI is unique and can only ever represent one entity.

Legal entities worldwide recognize, agree with, and trust in the LEI’s legitimacy because it is based on the global ISO 17442 standard, and because it is administered by GLEIF, a supranational, not-for-profit foundation, backed by the G20 and the Financial Stability Board, and overseen by the Regulatory Oversight Committee (ROC).
